“Draco!” Lucius Malfoy called from his position behind the Dark Lord.
Hermione automatically looked behind her to find him — to find the boy she once loved — the boy who betrayed her.
What she didn’t expect was to see him also looking at her. And the heart she had guarded for so long ached when she saw his torn expression, his betrayal forgotten as she feared for his choice — his future.
She tuned out the Dark Lord’s speech in the background and tried to go to him but Ron held her arm tightly.
Hermione tried to tell him “Don’t go.” but before she could, he had already looked at his family and closed his eyes. After what seemed like an eternity, he turned to her and shook his head.
His eyes were telling her what his mouth couldn’t.
I’m sorry.
I love you.
Please understand.
Maybe someday.
And her heart broke again as she watched Draco Malfoy betray her for the second time.
And every day that you want to change, that you want to change
I’ll help you see it through ‘cause I just really want to be with youHermione stared at him for a few moments while her brain tried to register his words. She was honestly shocked he was speaking to her, they had been on a mission together and all the twitchy little ferret had said to her were one word responses.
Most of the time Hermione paid no mind to him, but she had been preoccupied looking at a map and accidentally bumped into him; she huffed in annoyance as she stared up at him in confusion. Before she could inquire about why they had suddenly stopped he spoke, “Beautiful,” he paused for a moment.
Malfoy turned his head and looked down his pointed nose at her, “Isn’t it Granger?”
Hermione’s attention was elsewhere though, she watched as a smile formed onto Malfoy’s lips and his eyes danced lightly. She felt her cheeks redden, to say she was awe-struck was an understatement; the light was hitting his face in the most stunning ways and it had honestly knocked the wind out of her.
She would not admit to having her breath taken away, gracefully, by Draco Malfoy.
He turned his attention back to the view and Hermione finally looked up. “Yeah, it is,” she said as a small smile played on her lips.
